The basis of crypto currency is to have alternatives to the Central Banks of the world. I was given some Crypto Currency for work I had done, but never really cared about it. I woke up one day and was like, "I think I am going to research it". So that is what I did and I started from the bottom.
My initial research of course was the mining of the crypto currencies. I learned that to research mining, you have to start with faucets. So, what is a faucet? A faucet is a website, game, or program that is designed to give small amounts of the coins in order to either advertise to you (so they get money to mine) or link to your IP as it is on their site and siphon a small amount of your power. They don't see where you are or what's on your CPU, but they run a program that allows them to use a small amount of your CPU's power while on their site OR via a downloaded program.
I see the problems with letting people use your CPU's power (and seeing your actual IP address). So I tried it only with a person who I know with a different computer.
These small amounts of crypto aren't much to write home about, but they allow you to get enough to upgrade at some sites. These upgrades allow you to make more, in less time. Then you can get enough to upgrade again. So on, so forth. Eventually, you can get your own host and run your own faucets to allow you to mine coin. I am not at that level yet, but my friend is and I saw the equipment and resources needed to do it.
I have yet to use a dollar of my own money and the sports betting/upgrades were based on crypto I have made from the faucets.
